Every time I fire up a new Facebook game I can’t help but feel that I’ve played it before. Sure the graphics are different and the names of things are similar but not quite the same. But the basics are identical. Click on something and energy gets used. When energy is gone you have to wait a while before you can play again. Doing stuff to earn in-game money, the more it costs the more you’ll get back and the longer it’ll take to get it back. So whether you’re building a barn in Farmville, robbing people in Mafia Wars, or polishing your Hon office furniture in Futuristic Space Sim Business Tower of Clowns, it all boils down to “same shit different pile”. And yet here I sit, feeding chicks in Frontierville, and enjoying it anyway!

A couple years ago or so when I was playing MTGO (Magic Online) quite regularly, I was running a couple bots to buy and sell cards whenever I wasn’t using my computer for other things. It was a good way to build my personal collection, but then they released MTGO v3 and all the existing bots wouldn’t work with it anymore. The cheap one I was using, YaTBoT, was never updated so I was out of luck. All the ones I could find charged a % of your transactions, or cost a fortune to buy outright so I didn’t bother anymore.

A few days ago after I started playing online again I was buying up some commons for my collection and noticed a lot of the bots were from MTGO Library so I went to check it out and it seems to be pretty good. Pretty straight forward, no running in ellipticals trying to figure out how to use them, you can either pay a small monthly fee to use the bots or they can charge a small percentage of your transactions. 2.5% to 3.5%, which you can buy credit in advance so that no one ever has to log in and take money direct from your bot. So far I haven’t had any sales, but it’s taken a couple days just to get the kinks worked out and get it running stable. Competition seems a lot more fierce than a couple years ago though since all the new bots are “smart bots”, they can track prices for individual cards much easier than they used to.

Everytime I read about Japanese gamers.. and how some would die in front of their computer or gaming system, it never failed to leave me flabbergasted. How do one get to this extreme and ignore their health and even their life. Someone that I came to know online was on disability insurance played all day and all night. Good thing he had Allsup who has a 98% success rate for those who complete the SSDI process with them. I heard that Allsup is a leading nationwide provider of financial and healthcare related services to people with disabilities. Since 1984, Allsup has helped more than 110,000 people receive their entitled Social Security Disability Insurance and Medicare benefits. So gamers out there.. who needs insurance like that, check them out.

Well, Evony feels like the biggest waste of time ever. I went to sleep one night with a couple of decent size towns and 2 smaller towns. I woke up in the morning to find I had been attacked 153 times by the same person and completely lost my 2 biggest towns. Weeks spent building everything up, all gone while I slept for just 1 night. What a huge waste. I think this game needs some serious retooling, or maybe some insurance online options so that if you get totally thrashed you get a bunch of resources back to help rebuild. Something like pay 500 gold a day and if you get destroyed you get 200k of each resource mailed to you so you can get a quick start in a new city.

I’m past the 1 week mark, around 10 or 11 days now actually, and the game is still pretty fun. I’ve just started work on my third city, my first one is getting built up quite nicely and the second is a cash cow. After the beginner protection was lifted I started scouting and attacking some of the local players and have become hooked on that part of it. I’ve hauled away as many as 600,000 resources from enemy cities, it would take half a day for my farms and mills to produce that much but it only took a half hour for my army to go steal it!

So while my wife shops around online for wholesale handbags, I <strike>rape &</strike> pillage the neighbours for their food, wood and precious stones. It’s all in good fun. Today someone sent one of their alliance members after me in retaliation for hitting one of their unprotected but rich towns. His little army was decimated by the raw power of my archer towers. whee.

I’m bored. And since playing a new game sounds like more fun than buying faucets online I figured I’d check out this new game I saw advertised in my own sidebar, Evony. FREE FOREVER! They really like to pimp that free forever feature. As with most free online games these days you can choose to pay for premium features if you want to. I choose not to for now, but so far it’s an interesting little game.

So far I’ve been building and building and building since all new players are under 7 day protection from attacks. Once that 7 days is up I’ll find out how much fun the game still is, I just hope I can get a big enough army by then to save my ass from annihilation. There’s a good bunch of “quests” to follow which keep you cruising quite well as far as resources to. Pay 10k gold to build something and chances are you’ll get a quest reward for 10k gold or more just for building that something. It helps your first city to grow really fast.

The game world is persistent, which so far is a good thing. I go to bed at night and when I get up in he morning I have a crapload of resources which I can use to get started on new buildings and upgrades. The downside to this is that once the 7 day protection is over, I could wake up in the morning to find myself wiped out. I don’t know how the combat part is handled yet, and whether or not you can lose your city or just your soldiers. I’ll be finding that out in a few days too.

So far it’s fun and if I keep playing beyond the weekend I’ll post another update with my ‘progress’.

I’ve become a little addicted to tower defense games lately. Up until about a month ago I never knew there was a whole genre dedicated to this type of game. The first one I played was Crystal Defenders on the XBox 360. Put your dudes along a path, monsters walk along the path and hopefully your dudes kill them. If you planned it out properly.

Then I came across Gemcraft on Kongregate (the game itself is by Armor Games) and played that quite a bit for a few days. It was pretty easy after gaining a few levels though and I figure it was only about a week until I had beaten all the secret levels and finally the big boss at the end of the game. I thought I’d be able to get back to the 360 for a while after that but noooo. I just had to go check out Armor Games and sure enough, there’s a sequel to Gemcraft out now. So I gave it a shot.

It’s a lot harder than the first one. I find myself struggling at times even on these earlier levels. The play mechanics are similar but with a lot of changes/additions. It’s more about strategy than brute force, in some levels I felt I was throwing everything but the bathroom sink at those little monsters and I lose every time. It’s frustrating sometimes but I still feel compelled to try again and again.

Everyone else is talking about this new game from SOE so I figured I might as well too. I started playing today and it was easy to jump into. I didn’t have to create an account since I already have a station account, and it only downloads the parts you need as you need them so there was no big wait time right at the beginning. The game installed fast and I was playing in about 10 minutes.

So far after about an hour I have a couple small gripes and that’s with the controls. Why can’t I re-map from the stupid WASD setup?! I’m a touch typist, I like to keep my fingers on the home row keys. I don’t like having to move my left hand to the left to use the stupid WASD keys for movement when it’s so much more convenient to use ESDF like I do in every other game I play. Also, how do I invert my mouselook, doesn’t seem to be an option for that either. I know they’re aiming this game at kids and casual gamers, but they could at least include an ‘advanced’ tab for those of us who know what we’re doing.

Aside from that it looks to be fun enough. There’s a wide variety of jobs you can do simply by doing the starting quests. Oh, I forgot to mention but it’s pretty obvious from the name alone, Free Realms is free to play. Of course you can pay for premium features if you choose. Extra content, extra character classes/jobs, and so on.

So far I’ve gone fighter mode and beaten up some baddies, then I put on a chef hat and baked some goodies. I haven’t read up on it much but I presume there would be other typical jobs as well, like making engagement rings as a jeweler or some armor/weapons as a blacksmith. Stuff like that. There’s 15 job types in the game and so far I’ve only done 3 of them, although I did unlock destruction derby driver. That seems crazy enough for this type of game so it wouldn’t surprise me to see other interesting stuff crop up the next time I play.

I’ve been cranking my way through engineering on Kalamaf and spending a ton of money in the process, so far I’m up to 425, so I’m almost done with it. Then I get the fun job of grinding reputation up to exalted so I can get the Chopper. It looks awesome but is going to kill me, price wise, since I don’t have a high level miner and will have to buy the mats. I really should work on my other gatherer dudes, but the grind from mid-30’s up to 65 is keeping me from following through on the whole idea. All those bells & whistles & industrial knobs better be worth it, riding around on a hog should be fun in the old zones at least, cause by the time I can even make it I’ll be able to fly again in the new zones and won’t be riding much.

As for other fun stuff, there’s the usual bombs and awesome headgear, and a newer improved version of the explosive sheep. And a new sapper charge, cause there’s nothing quite like being a suicide bombing priest >:)

Thanks to the World of Warcraft Scroll of Resurrection I get to play free for 10 days, on my main account, to see if I find the game interesting enough again. If an account has been inactive for at least 90 days, it can be resurrected by someone with an active account. This is much better than just loading up a free trial for testing because with a trial I’d have to start over at level 1. Now I can test out my old toons to see how the recent changes have affected them.

So far it looks like I might stay, and get Lich King, and when I subscribe again or use a game card, the guy who sent me the resurrection will get a free month. If I reactivate I’ll be trying to get some old friends back in as well, get me some free months too.

I’ve been getting the itch to play an MMORPG again lately but deciding which one to play is the hard part. Lich King just came out for WoW and I hear it’s good, much better than Burning Crusade. I also hear they’ve been making lots of game play changes over the last several months so I may have to re-learn what I’m doing. EverQuest II also got a new expansion recently, Shadow Odyssey, which introduces LDoN style dungeons to the game. The problem is that will be mostly group oriented content and most of my time is spent solo due to having limited play time.

Then of course there are the games I haven’t even tried yet, Conan and Warhammer, both are supposed to be good games and would probably be fun to play, but it’s cheaper to just buy an expansion for a game I already own. LOTR might be worth a peek too and it’s only around $30 to buy. There’s too many to choose from!

It’s been quite some time since I’ve played an MMORPG so when I found out about Crowns of Power I decided to give it a try. The download is small and it’s free, there are no monthly fees either so it’s completely free to play. You can pay for premium features if you like, but so far from what I’ve seen it’s definitely not necessary. The game is thoroughly enjoyable as-is and given the price, they got a lot of things right. Controls are mostly good, graphics are ok but dated and it runs very smooth on my aging work computer.

Monster types are somewhat varied but typical. No alli eating aligators so far but I’m hoping to find some somewhere, just because. Goblins, bears, skeletons and the usual fare populate the are surrounding your starting town and quests are plentiful enough to keep you leveling at a good pace. I got drive-by buffed up by a high level dude that was in the area and proceeded to zip through 4 levels with very little effort. Overall it’s a very solid little game that should only improve as time passes and more content is added. I recommend checking it out!

I guess I really am just burned out on MMO’s these days, even with EQ2 being free I find I hardly ever log in to play. A friend is into Age of Conan and plans to give me a buddy key whenever they finally start handing them out, but that isn’t really high on my list of priorities either. Maybe it will grab me once I get to try it though, but basically they all end up playing pretty similar, just with different graphics.

The 360 is just so damn fun and I still haven’t played a lot of the games I’ve picked up. Speaking of picked up, I just snagged a carrying case for it that looks kind of like these Zero Halliburton briefcases. There’s room in it for the console, 2 controllers and a couple of games. Great for traveling, not that we travel much these days though.
