Dat’s a big damn turtle!

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy XIII for a while now, around 60 hours total, and I’m still not at a point where I can kill the big turtles. The little ones I can do, but one stomp from the big ones kills my entire party! It was funny the first time, Oh look, there’s a big ass turtle. Attack! (I knew I’d get wasted but I wanted to see just how bad it would be) And it one shotted my whole party.

Not sure what I’d do with such a beast if I did manage to kill it. Carry off some scales to sell? Doubt it. This is a Final Fantasy game afterall, it’s probably got some crazy loot like gold teeth or something.

Enough with the Motion controls!

God damn it Microsoft and Sony, just because everyone went ape shit over the stupid Wii and it’s motion controls doesn’t mean you need to do it too! You know what? I own a Wii, and a 360 and a PS3. The Wii hasn’t been used in months while the 360 and PS3 get used almost daily. Why? Because bullshit motion control is a gimmick and it gets old real fast. It’s not like they really help you lose weight or keep fit in most cases. It just capitalizes on the fact that it’s the “new thing”. Good game play (with a normal CONTROLLER) and good graphics make games far more interesting! New Super Mario Brothers would have been worlds better if it had controlled like the Super Mario World on the SNES. Having to shake the controller to fly and what not is irritating. I won’t buy Natal, I won’t buy that fruity Sony wand, and if the games I like won’t work with a standard controller then I guess I’ll have to upgrade my computer and go back to gaming on that in the future.

Final Fantasy XIII played

I’ve been playing the game for 8 hours so far, and while it was a little slow starting it’s ramping up to be pretty good. The story, as with most FF games, is getting quite deep and involved and is sure to be one of the best things about the game.

Does nutrisystem work? I have no idea. Does the combat system in FF13 work? Sure does! Honestly, I really really miss the golden days of turn based combat where you have time to think and plan your attacks, but the overall feel and speed of combat in FF13 makes up for the lack of nostalgia. Most of the time I find myself just hitting the auto attack button, but needing to change paradigms several times in each battle keeps it from getting boring. I like that battles aren’t random invisible encounters as well, and it only takes a second or two before and after each battle unlike older games where you had to wait 10 to 15 seconds for the battle to load. Every battle.

Oh and as for which version I went with, definitely PS3 for this game. lensoftruth.com had a head2head posted on release day and it’s very obvious that the PS3 version blows the 360 out of the water. Textures are smoother, cinematics are amazing and shadows are more realistic, to name just a few of the things that make it better on PS3. The 360 had a couple of places where it looks better, mainly with the rendering distance, and if all you own is a 360 then get the game anyway, it will not be disappointing. But if you have both systems and an HD TV then PS3 is the way to go this time around.

Just Cause 2

I’ve had the demo for this sitting on my PS3 for a while now but never got around to trying it out. But after seeing it in Walmart for only $39.83 last night I decided it was time to fire up the demo and see if the game is worth getting. It’s not often that new games come out at such a low price but usually the ones that do are actually great games. Batman Arkham Asylum and Borderlands both launched at the $40 price point and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them.

Just Cause 2 looks like another great one from the little bit I played. The demo alone is massive, I hit the map screen and zoomed out and holy crap is the game world ever huge. The controls are decent enough but the switching of weapons seems a little clunky since you have fire buttons for each hand. I’m sure I’ll get used to it though. The star of the show seems to be the grappling hook though. I left town and was running down the road, I noticed my crosshairs changed when I aimed at a tree in the distance. I fired my grapple and sure enough it latched onto the tree and suddenly I was flying across the ground toward the tree! Nice, it was faster than walking but certainly no ticket to quick weight loss but it was fun so I kept grappling from tree to tree until I got to the next village where I promptly started blowing stuff up. Then I ran out of bullets so I grappled away down the hill and made my escape. Then my 30 minutes was up so I deleted the demo and went out to buy the game.

PS3 Slim

Tonight I got my hands on a PS3 slim, I decided to keep it and sell my regular older style PS3, which also had a 120gb drive in it (I upgraded from the 40gb it started with). It’s not really as pointless as it sounds at first glace, the slim uses less power which is a great plus, and from what I read in comparisons it loads faster than the big one, so while running a game for the first time I only have time to read some comics instead of a big document like a whole life insurance policy. Any shortening of load times is a great thing in my opinion! The disc drive is a bit louder though, but still doesn’t come close the noise generated by my 360 so I’m not concerned about that at all.

Final Fantasy XIII

So it’s a no-brainer that I’ll be picking up Final Fantasy XIII next week when it launches, but I still haven’t decided which console to get it for. I love the 360, especially the controller, but I hear the PS3 will have a bit of an edge this time around when it comes to graphics and sound. The PS3 version fits on one disc and is said to be around 38gb in size. The 360, with it’s games still on regular DVDs will require custom tote bags just to carry all the discs. I’m kidding. It’s been compressed to fit on 3 DVDs and totals around 18gb. So they managed to get it to be 20gb smaller than the PS3 version, makes ya wonder how much quality was sacrificed to accomplish this feat. Or maybe they were just lazy on the PS3 version and wanted to leave it huge just to say hey, we’re bigger so that means we’re better!

I might have to wait a couple extra days and see what The Lens of Truth has to report about the differences before I pick this one up. Another factor to consider will be load times. I’ve found the 360 to be much faster with loading than the PS3, especially since I can install games to the hard drive.
