I’ve always been a believer that playing games is good for you as long as you don’t go overboard and play all the time. Shooters help develop hand-eye coordination, RPG’s can get to your emotional side with great story-telling and adventure games tend to have challenging puzzles that encourage you to think outside the box. And of course games like Dance Dance Revolution and Wii Fit can get you some much needed exercise.

While they probably won’t help you much with those SAT prep courses, a sharper mind in general is always a good thing to have. So be sure to include some game time in your daily schedule, along with sleeping enough, eating right and getting some fresh air. Everything is good in moderation!

Someone gave us a little gift bag at Christmas that included a box of Lifesavers. It ended up under some clothes in a pile in the bedroom until a few days ago when it was re-discovered, opened and (almost) eaten. See, they’re supposed to be the old-school hard life savers, not the new gummy type. But, they were going kinda soft although they still tasted fine. I opened a 2nd roll and happened to see the expiry date on the silver foil under the paper wrapper. March 30, 2007. Ack! No wonder these things were beyond the help of anti aging vitamins, they were nearly 3 years past due. Good thing they don’t turn poisonous or anything! I think someone needs to go back to the store and see what’s up with that, cause damn that’s old!

It seems like this town has a hard time holding on to good doctors lately. A few years back the wife & kids family doc picked up and moved without even letting them know. We managed to find a new one for them fairly quickly and he’s been around for a few years now. It took a while for the kid to warm up to him since she was only 3 when she first saw him, but now she’ll even climb up on the exam table without fussing, and lets him check her ears and throat and all that. So it’s such a shame that we just learned he’s moving away in 3 months and we’re stuck with once again needing to find a new doctor.

I’m sure we’ve all heard lots of stories about gamers taking their hobby a little too seriously, to the point where they end up dead due to various reasons such as sleep deprivation, starvation and so on. Seems like a tiny bit of common sense is all you’d need to keep yourself alive during an extended gaming session though. Eat once in a while, use the bathroom when needed (poopsocking and peeing in bottles is disgusting, c’mon idiots!) drink lots of water and at least take a nap a day if not a good night sleep.

Some more unconventional ways to approach hard core gaming could include strapping on a Philips AED to keep the ticker going, and a blood sugar test machine to make sure you’re not overdosing on cookies and other junk food. But seriously people, gaming is fun and all but I’ve never run across a game worth dying for!

The little one in the house is getting a little too big for her toddler bed. Her feet aren’t dangling off the edge yet, but another growth spurt is all it’ll take to render this one useless. There’s a lot of options out there for new beds, but most are way out of my price range. Those inflatable Sleep Number Beds look pretty interesting, you can inflate or deflate them as needed to get them to the perfect comfortable firmness for a great night sleep. Of course they’re about 5 times the cost of a regular boxspring and mattress so I won’t be getting one of those any time soon.

One of the best skin care products I’ve used lately is made by a local company. The cream is made from natural calciums from shell fish and works great on various skin conditions such as psoriasis. It’s great for bug bites as well since it acts as a disinfectant, killing the poisons that the bug injects into your skin. So far it’s only available locally but once they get their patents in order it will make it’s way into the rest of Canada and the U.S. Neptune’s Balance – Aqua Healing Cream is going to be the official name as far as I know.

I’ve recently realized the importance of having some sort of medical id on your person at all times. My wife has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of weeks due to an upcoming surgery, and her one allergy is to penicillin. An allergy that the health care people definitely need to know about if she were to have complications afterward. If she were tended by a different doc who doesn’t know about the allergy it could lead to serious problems. Protect yourself or your loved ones from such an incident by at least wearing an alert bracelet.

After hearing some of the horror stories surrounding asbestos I’m sure glad we never had the stuff in our home when I was growing up, ya know, back before they knew it could kill you. Probably the most serious result of being around asbestos is the chance of developing mesothelioma, a cancer that can affect many organs in the body but more often than not it goes after the lungs. My lungs are bad enough already, having grown up with asthma and 2 smoking parents. But who can blame them, smoking used to be perfectly normal.

I think there was a touch of the flu in there too since I was running a low fever for a couple of days last week. Now I’m left with the chest congestion and hacking cough, what fun. But, I still have to work just as much so I haven’t even been able to catch up on any extra gaming. I’ve been grinding through Blacksite: Area 51, Full Auto and a bit of Guitar Hero III. I also tried out Dynasty Warriors 5 for an hour, so far I’m not really liking it too much, but I’ll give it another go tonight after I flip through the instruction book to see if I’m missing out on something obvious.

Working with computers for a living and playing games in my spare time, combined with 6 months of cold weather equals out to one out of shape guy. I do have an exercise bike, but lately I just get too lazy to use it. For a while I’d try to get at least 20 mins a day on it and it wasn’t too bad since it’s in the living room, I could just fire up the xbox and play some games while riding. It’s not one of those annoying elliptical rigs, just a basic stationary bike so you don’t need to hold on with your hands. Since getting hooked on Guitar Hero and Rock Band though, I can’t play while riding. Hitting the right notes and timing is near impossible when you’re pumping your legs up and down on the pedals. I think maybe a treadmill would suffice though since walking isn’t as intense an activity.

Fried chicken, chicken rice, chicken fried rice, steamed chicken and lately grilled chicken has been making it’s way onto my plate fairly often. I was looking around the internet for some new chicken recipes and came across El Pollo Loco, Mexican grilled chicken. I didn’t find any recipes there but there are a lot of funny videos of people experimenting with chicken, it looks like a contest of some sort. Check it out!

A common problem some people have in their teenage years, although it’s not one that I suffered, is Acne. It can range from just a few pimples for some people, to full facial redness and scarring in others. There are several causes of acne, including but not limited to: bacteria, hormones and follicle fallout.

While there’s no ‘cure’ for acne, it can be treated in a number of ways. Treatment is typically determined by first finding out the type of acne with which you are infected. Different types will respond better to some treatments than to others, so this first step is the most important. Don’t let a bad case of acne ruin your social life, get it checked out and start treating it as soon as possible.
