A friend had invited the entire family for a BBQ - in his cottage – which was actually one of those park model trailers – now I didn’t realized that they were so nice and that there were more than one family in the country having the same kind of model trailers. So while the family is swimming by the lake and bbqing – the guys did some gaming – of Magic there. Now the spouse got really interested in it because of my brother who lives out in the woods near my parents. She figured if it wasn’t expensive and affordable – maybe my brother should buy something like this model trailers instead of living out in his little cottage that he built himself that doesn’t have electricity. Now that is an option worth thinking of for my brother – for we’ve always wondered if his cubby hole is safe for him. But having said all that the spouse had mentioned that we might want one too – for a summer hideout in the country. It would be nice – near the lake for the kid loved to swim.

Last week – we had the most players/gamers for Magic The Gathering – thanks to our trusty acer netbooks we were all able to get our scores recorded. I don’t know why the others bought their netbook – but when I bought my – it was for traveling – since it was so small and easy to carry. Little did I know that for my Magic The Gathering Games – it would come in so handy – I not only use it to record the game – I also use it to look up rules for the games and the value of certain cards that I’m not sure of. Plus gamers trade their cards all the time – with our trusty acer netbooks – we can instantly find out about the value of the card – and do our trading in the gamer’s dungeon. So if you are playing Magic – don’t forget to bring along your acer netbooks.

So we had a bbq at the store during our Magic the Gathering gaming day – invited a few customers randomly to come have a hotdog on a Friday and a few did show up. Everyone who came brought something with them – and one of them broughat a chocolate birthday Sharis Berries which the kid and the spouse loved. The kid had her school friend come for bbq and guess who finished up the chocolate berries? no price for guessing – haha! the bbq went well but most importantly, we wanted to give back to our customers by sharing our food and drinks with them. Hopefully, next time we have more people showing up because there were lots of leftovers except for the chocolate berries.

And green lordish type things like Kaysa and Juniper Order Druid. The new version is going to be entirely squirrels if possible, with Doubling Season and some planeswalkers. Currently Ajani Goldmane and Elspeth because those are the only white ones I have, will add more when I get them. Instead of adult acne treatments I have Sigil Captains for pumping up those little 1/1′s. I’ve got a Beastmaster Ascension in case I end up with a bunch of little guys all dressed up and nowhere to go. I’ve got Mycoloths to eat ‘em up with and then spit out fresh ones later if he lives long enough. And I’ve just acquired 3 Liege of the Hollows because damnit, I need more squirrels!

Another Magic set is almost upon us and the spoilers are running rampant. So far this set is looking absolutely powerful. Lots of “new” mechanics, I say new because while Infect looks new it’s really just a combination of 2 old mechanics; wither and poison. Proliferate looks like it will be insane with Planeswalkers, and in Classic it could be a killer. I just picked up a couple Doubling Seasons today and can’t believe I never thought of using them with Planeswalkers before. Most PW’s can go ultimate as soon as you play them if there’s a Doubling Season in play, that’s pretty cool and I need to abuse the hell out of it for the next time I run a Type I tourney.

I sure don’t know what the best diet pill on the market is, but I do know that making my own decks is more fun than looking up the winning deck of the week on the internet. So if I put some Doubling Seasons, some Snake Baskets and a couple Chandras in my deck, don’t go accusing me of netdecking just because I happened to come up with the same cards as some other guy. I don’t netdeck, and my eyes kinda just glaze over when someone tells me they’re playing Jund or Soul Sisters or some such thing, or they say “oh you’re playing Naya colors”. What the hell are Naya colors? I’m playing a deck where I get to say “I’m throwing 3 mountains at you, take 6 damage”. Dang kids these days and their fancy magic words.

I’ve finally done it! I built the deck I’ve been thinking of since M11 was released. The Titanic. It was originally 20 Titans and 40 ways to get mana onto the table. Now it’s 20 Titans, 4 Clones, 4 Rite of Replication and 32 ways to get mana onto the table. It’s almost always a blast to play but sometimes it’s too slow and gets flattened by fast weenie decks.

Actually it’s not 100% complete though, I still need to do a little green shopping, as in, I still need 3 Primeval Titans. I feel they’re not the best Titan in the deck though since by the time I can cast 1 Titan I have enough mana on the board to cast any of them. Greenie does thin out the deck though so I have a better chance of drawing more Titans instead of land once I get on a roll.

I was browsing through my one of my old card binders the other day, looking to see if any new deck ideas would pop into my head. While looking I realized there’s some cards from back then that could be re-made as new card types. Jandor’s Saddlebags would make a great equipment to put on the ol’ Ebony Horse. Horses need horse tack after-all right? Joira’s Toolbox seems like it would be good for a tinker style deck, maybe giving the equipped creature the ability to regenerate an artifact or bring one back from the graveyard. I know the old cards abilities don’t match this line of thinking, but the names are what inspired it.

I’ve been so out of touch with Magic over the last (great) number of years and so many changes have been made to the game that it took a while to really get back into and know what was going on. I’ve pretty much caught up on everything so I decided to take the Rules Adviser test and see how I’d do. I failed miserably! I’m going to have to spend some time with the official rules website to brush up a little more.

Since I’m running tournaments now it would be good to become an official Judge, but to do that you need to actually go to other tournaments and learn from other judges. That’s a problem since I’ve got a wife and kid and a business to look after. With the nearest big tournaments over 3 hours drive from here, I can’t just abandon everything to go play cards, learn stuff and be forced to use gross public toilets. So I’ll settle for becoming a rules adviser instead, it’s just a step below judge and all you have to do is pass an online test. Being a tournament organizer gives me the right to be head judge anyway, but it would be nice to have someone official if I ever attempt to run larger tournaments.

Having our little Magic tournaments on Saturday night just doesn’t seem to be working out that well. It started good, 10 people showed up, but then the next week only 5 and then the following week only 3. The problem is that the other shop in town plays Saturday afternoon, so by the time they finish, people have either had enough magic for the day or they want to go get food or see a movie or something, so 5pm on Saturday just wasn’t a good time slot. So now we’re going to try 6pm on Friday’s, feedback is good so far but we’ll see how many actually turn up tomorrow night.

Tonight was the first DCI sanctioned tournament at my store and overall I’d call it a success. 10 people showed up and had a good time. I placed 7th, the deck I built wasn’t very good. Even though I had play-tested an online version of it, I couldn’t find all the cards I needed out here in the real world and the deck suffered because of it. I took a few pictures since Wizards requires some pictures of the play area in use, not enough to make a grand slide show or anything, just a few shots from around the store and a bunch of people intently trying to beat each other up with paper.

I’ve decided that while I’m not giving up completely on drafting online, I’m going to stick to Swiss drafts so I’ll at least get to play all 3 rounds, win or lose. Since making that decision I seem to be doing a little better. I bought 3 packs and drafted a few days ago, winning 2 rounds and thereby winning 2 packs. I bought a 3rd to go with them and drafted again, this time also winning 2 packs. Sure it’s only $8 worth of winnings so it’s not like I could go out and buy some new mbt shoes but it lets me play extra games practically for free, so that’s cool, and I get cards out of it that I can either add to my collection or sell to help pay for more games.

Took part in an M11 draft last night, I drafted mostly red and could have done mono-red but splashed in a little green for extra beefy creatures to use with Fling. I built the deck around 2 Chandra’s Spitfire, 2 Fling, 2 Fireball, 1 Lightning Bolt and some random red & green critters. Awakener Druid tends to be good in limited since he brings a 4/5 beastie with him.

The best moment was probably when my mono-black opponent with 4 swamps on the table and a Whispersilk Cloak in play dropped a Nantuko Shade. It’s a combo he had used to win most of his previous games of the evening. My mountains were tapped so I guess he thought he was safe to bring in the shade and equip it before I could bolt/fireball it next turn. He tapped his last 2 swamps to equip the cloak and I responded with the green beast that is Hornet Sting. Aww yeah.
