While playing Rock Band at a friends house the other day we were yakking about what new songs we’d like to see in the game. He thought some of my choices were a little retarded, but then some of his were out to lunch too if you ask me. Tipa at West Karana just had a post about songs she’d like to see in the game as well, which presented me a perfect opportunity to bore you all with some of my picks.

Most of these were chosen by the guitar minded side of me. I don’t have the drum set and I can’t sing for shit, so for me it’s all about guitar. One of my choices, the Kids in the Hall Theme (Having an Average Weekend, for those that always wondered the real name of the tune) has no vocals what-so-ever, so that song really belongs in Guitar Hero, not Rock Band, but too bad, it’s my list.

Redneck Rampage just sounds like it would be fun to play although the intro should probably be chopped out due to it’s content. For those that bother to listen to playlist, Mojo Nixon isn’t quite what I’d call work safe.

Ultimately, it’s very hard to pick just 10 songs. ZZ Top alone has several I’d like to be able to play. Even though La Grange is already in GH3, I want it in Rock Band so I don’t have to keep switching games just for that song. There are others in GH3 that I love to play though, mostly the 80s hair metal (Scorpion & Poison). Given more time I’m sure I could refine this list a little better, but I’m busy.

Singer/song writer Alisa Apps recently admitted that she sucks her thumb but is trying to stop. The video she posted looks more like a ploy for attention rather than an actual confession of some ‘dark secret’. I can’t say as I have any secret vices of my own really, just typical stuff like eating chocolate and playing video games. Things I feel compelled to do but have no intention of stopping since I enjoy them both immensely. Although my scale says I should probably cut back on the chocolate a bit. Maybe someday.

I know that you spent really good money on your CD, and that you want to be able to listen to it while you’re working out, but sometimes the machines at the gym are louder than a construction zone. Thankfully, Quiet Headphones has a great selection of noise canceling headphones and earbuds. With these you can hear the music that keeps you motivated to go that extra mile and not the guy on the treadmill next to you getting ready to have a coronary. It’s the only way I can think of to listen to my music, and once you try it out I’m sure you’ll agree. And if you are thinking about traveling, then the travel headphones will be perfect for keeping out the noise, letting you enjoy the trip.

Heavy Metal. I used to hate it. My little brother liked it so it couldn’t possibly be good, right? How wrong I was. At the time I was more into old school Rap (well, back then it wasn’t old school) Beastie Boys, Run DMC, etc.

I smartened up a few years later, when I was 16 or so and over at a friends house. He had Metallica blasting in his fancy new CD player and after listening to a few songs I began to realize that hey, this stuff is awesome. The super fast guitar solos up on the high notes, the pounding drum beats and the awesome power chords. And the lyrics. Yes, often it does sound like screaming and honestly I don’t know the words to a lot of the songs I listen to. The music alone is just so powerful and the lyrics, once you figure them out, can be surprisingly deep and meaningful. Telling stories of war victims, drug addiction, love, life, death and just about any other topic imaginable.

There are more types of metal music these days than I care to keep track of. Death metal, black metal, doom metal and so on. For me though, good old 80’s metal was the pinnacle. Granted there is still some decent stuff around today, but for my ears nothing beats the metal gods of the 80s. Now if you’ll excuse me, all this reminiscing has me in need of a serious metal infusion.
