This past weekend we took a few days off and went up to Halifax. This was the first trip we’ve been on since getting an iPhone and I’ve gotta say that little gadget sure saved us a lot of time and gas. Normally I can find the places I’m looking for, eventually. Since we’re not up in the Halifax area very often, I don’t know my way around much aside from the few regular places we go to. Now, thanks to the iPhone maps & GPS, we got from place to place much quicker and knew immediately when we took a wrong turn. I think it easily saved us $10 worth of gas from not having to drive up and down streets looking for the right one.

There’s millions (well, 100′s of thousands) of other apps available on the iPhone as well ranging anywhere from free dating apps to video game price guides to silly games. I’ve picked up a few apps that should make life a little easier when out and about and will research the GPS apps a little more before our next trip. As nice as the maps feature is, I think actual GPS software would be even better.

Yes! I’m behind the times! I just started playing Fable II a few days ago, my attempt to clear something off my game shelf that’s been sitting there for a loooong time.

I’m finding it pretty fun so far, but as I’ve heard from other people, the game seems to be pretty short if you just want to play through the main story quests. You can waste a lot of time if you do a lot of side stuff though, or if you try to get the various achievements. Lots of things to collect and apparently some of them require trading with other players on Xbox live, so by now I’m probably too late to the party.

Also seems to be a variety of clothes/hair dyes to customize your character with, but the variety is somewhat limited so if you want some Cherokee scrubs, good luck, but if you want to make a stereotypical Goth toon, you can do that.

I’ve been looking to replace the Sony Bravia audio system I have in the living room. I liked it for a while because it matches my TV and they cooperate nicely, but now I’m finding that the sound just isn’t as good as it could be, and when playing music games the delay is very bad since the sound goes through HDMI to the TV and then optical cable from the TV to the sound system.

I was considering an LG home theatre system since the sound is a lot better, but I’d still have the same problem with delay when it comes to music gaming.

I’ll likely end up with a standalone receiver that supports HDMI switching and has 1 button access to Stereo mode. That way I can have great 7.1 sound, have better & easier control over the volume of each speaker, and it will still be easy to control it all because there’s only one cable going out to the TV.

I finished off Two Worlds 2 about a week ago and only have 5 achievements left to get. 3 of those are the multiplayer ones which seem like they’ll be the hardest to finish off since there doesn’t seem to be many games in my level range.

I rolled up a fresh level 1 and was about to get in a duel with another level 1. Kicked his ass but then couldn’t get any more so I put away Soccer Socks, I actually named him that, and went back to the single player campaign to work on the Giriza questline. I screwed up on my first play through and was only able to get 90/100 faction with the thieves. So, I’ve had to play though again in order to re-do those quests.

Next I think I’ll play something different, Saints Row maybe, I keep starting it but never get very far before something else takes my attention.

Saw the Game on Xbox 360 turned out to be better than I expected. It played like the movies for the most part, where you need to figure out puzzles to save/kill people and stay alive yourself. It was also a pretty easy 1000 gamerscore points, the hardest most frustrating part achievement was getting the 5 curb stomps. It’s hard to knock someone down without killing them, and then you need to be standing in just the right spot to initiate the curb stomp, and then you need to hit the right button within about a second to actually do the stomp. 5 times. Argh!

There’s lots of stuff to make you cringe, like sticking your arm into a toilet full of back acne treatment syringes, or when you’re not paying full attention running down a hallway and suddenly your head vaporizes due to a shotgun trap.

A copy for PS3 just came into my store the other day and I’m thinking of playing through it again on that just for the easy trophies. But that fucking curb stomping, ugh, maybe not. But I do want a platinum trophy, haven’t managed to get one yet!

I can’t tell the difference between diamond or cubic zirconia rings, I don’t know how to tell if something gold is real, or what carat it is.

I’m around 35 hours into it now and have been in chapter 3 for a little while now, just killed a demon priest guy so I think I’m nearing the end. It’s been a fun ride, and I’ve still got a bunch of multiplayer stuff to do if I want to get the achievements. And I do. I got all of them in the first game so it only makes sense to do it in this one too. And in the 3rd one when that comes out next year. I hope it really does come out then!

Like the first one, I find that my inventory is full of stuff I don’t care about and will never bother to use. Tons of plants I’ve picked up, animal parts, vitamins, gems and spell components. At least there are separate inventory pages this time around so I don’t even have to look at this stuff if I don’t want to.

I will get into the spell system later though, either after I’ve finished the game, or maybe start a fresh game with a new wizardly guy. Archery too I guess, a little, although I didn’t find it to be all that much fun with the little bit of shooting I took part in. Hacking and slashing is just more satisfying.

I’ve managed to complete a playset of Dominus of Fealty and have been working on a “What’s yours is mine” deck. At first I was going to use sac outlets to just get rid of the stolen items, but then I re-read Bazaar Trader and decided to go with a steal & keep angle instead. The current plan is to use Dominus and Act of Treason to steal things and the Trader to make them permanently mine. I’ll throw in some removal for when things get out of hand, and counters to try and keep things from getting out of hand in the first place. It’ll be a type 1 deck of course since Dominus is too old for type 2, but it could easily be converted to type 2 I figure, but maybe not quite as effective.

I’m trying to build an MTGO version of it but I don’t have any Dominus’s online and they seem rarer than hoodia diet pills on there. More expensive than I was expecting too, over 2 tix each, but I still have some tix left to spend so hopefully I can find 4.

Tonight I’m taking part in my first draft in MTGO. After looking through the tournament types I finally settled on an M10 Swiss draft. This way I get to play all 3 rounds whether I win or lose, and at the end I win a booster pack for each match that I won. Plus I get to keep the cards I drafted. I really have no idea what to look for as far as “best cards” go, but out of 3 packs I ended up snagging 6 rares. Some I won’t be using in my deck but I just couldn’t pass up the chance to snag extra rares.

First match is over and it was definitely more fun than reading diet pill reviews, I won the match 2-0. Here’s to hoping rounds 2 and 3 go just as well. I suppose it’s not the greatest, playing swiss, since even if I win all 3 rounds I get 3 packs whereas with regular drafts you have a chance to win as many as 8 packs. Gotta come in first to do that though and if you lose a match you’re done, so your chances are much better with Swiss.

Looks like my deck was too fast, the other games in round 1 aren’t even done yet.

That’s what I titled my most recent Magic deck in MTGO. You Gonna Use That Land?. It’s a blue/green land wrecker deck. Green stuff destroys it, blue stuff turns it into islands or causes pain when you tap it. I keep having mana problems of my own with it though despite having 20 lands in a 60 card deck, I just can’t figure it out. Oh! Oops, 63 cards with 20 lands. Still not a bad stretch though considering many of the cards only cost 2 or 3 mana each.

I originally had it configured with mostly red since that’s the common land destruction color and gives you the best fat burners like Incinerate, Lightning Bolt and Fireball. But it felt too generic and that’s why I went with the green/blue combo instead. It’s also an enchantress deck, since there’s so many blue land enchants I figured some Verdurans for drawing power and Yavimaya’s for killing would be the way to go. It’s fun regardless though and I’ll keep tweaking it as I go.

I tried to bling up my cafe in Cafe World on facebook but for some reason it won’t let me buy any more solid gold stoves! I have 4 or 5 that I bought a long time ago but now when I try to buy more they’re all greyed out. I can buy all the other stoves though, the football, the electric grill, the floating UFO thingies and anything else, but no gold! And no gold counters either, it’s weird. And annoying. But it’s just a silly facebook game so… I suppose it doesn’t matter much.

Change can be a good thing. Too much change is typically a bad thing. Unless it’s the clinky clink type of change you find in your pocket at the end of every day and throw it into a can or bottle and forget about it. Do this on a daily basis and eventually you’ll look into the can and go ‘damn, that’s a lot of change’. I’ve got 3 cans full of change right now and I’m sure it’s at least a couple hundred bucks. I’m just too lazy to roll it up and bring it to the bank, so there it sits. Rolling money isn’t fun. I need one of those machines you dump a handful into and it does all the work for you. Maybe I have enough change here to buy one of those machines. Vicious circle I seem to be stuck in eh?! I want fun things to do. Some people find it fun to sit around googling strange words like phentermine, I find it more fun to play games whenever I have some spare time. And right about now is some spare time so I’m off to play me some games before I fall asleep at my desk. Damn 7am comes waaaay too early.

Woot! Today I had a nice little check in the mail, just shy of $2000. It was a rebate for insurance premiums I had paid over the last 15 years for a cancer policy. It was one of their selling points when I took the policy, if I don’t make any claims on it in 15 years I get back all the premiums I paid in, so as of last October my 15 year period was up and a fresh 15 years started. Today my check finally arrived! Since it’s lower than a typical life insurance rate at only around $120 a year it wasn’t a big drain on my wallet but it makes for a nice lump sum now. Time to go pay some bills and maybe treat myself to a little something extra. A new TV stand for that new LCD perhaps!

I got a PS3 a couple months back but so far I still don’t have many games for it. While the system -is- good, basically the same as the XBox 360 when it comes to graphics and sound, I don’t like the controller as much. One place where the PS3 controller really shines though is the D-pad. The 360 directional pad is horrible. Absolute junk. I hate it with a passion. But aside from that the 360 controller is more solid feeling, has better placement for the left analog stick and the trigger buttons are better designed. My fingers keep slipping off the Playstation 3 triggers.

Having said that though, the system does have a few good exclusives that make it worth owning. I’ve long been a fan of the Ratchet & Clank series and you just can’t get it a non-Sony console. There’s a few interesting looking RPG’s that I haven’t played yet, but plan to some day, those being Folklore, Dark Kingdom and Valkyria Chronicles.
